In order to achieve the goal of sustainable development there is an established strategy to promote Sustainable Development supported by the UK Government based on the following principles:

  1. Living within acceptable environmental limits
  2. Ensuring a strong, healthy and fair society
  3. Contributing to a sustainable economy
  4. Promoting good governance
  5. Using sound science responsibly

Pearson shares these principles and this action plan demonstrates how Pearson VUE intends to put sustainability at the heart of its business with clear commitments to improving the impact it has on the environment and on the economy and society.

Pearson plc is striving towards the “Carbon Standard” in February 2010. This is run by the Carbon Trust and will include management of energy use and business travel.

 1.  Environmental Impact
Pearson VUE can make a difference in controlling the environment in which it works and has been engaged in setting up an environmental management system.  Pearson VUE achieved ISO:14001 Environment Management System Accreditation in May 2009 for the Salford Quays head quarters.  By taking these steps and a considerate approach to the environment, negative impacts will be reduced.

 4.  Promoting Good Governance
With leadership provided by Pearson plc Director of People, through its system of Governance, Pearson VUE is endeavouring to ensure that in all the dealings it has with staff, clients, regulatory bodies, stakeholders and the general public that such dealings are performed in the right way, for the right reasons, in a timely and inclusive way.

 5.  Using Sound Science Responsibly
The use of science based technologies at all levels has been a major factor in the development of Pearson VUE. Through the management framework and controls, the use of this resource is limited to the proper development of the business within legal and socially acceptable limits.

 6.  Best Practice Carbon Reporting
This is currently voluntary but it will become mandatory in 2012. In order to be in a position to provide accurate reporting Pearson will measure the effect of carbon emissions including the impact of business travel and commuting, review how its suppliers and contractors operate and will look for continuous improvement in these areas year on year.

Pearson VUE will use the above principles to carry forward the commitment it has to be a responsible organisation and continue to work towards the goals it has set.
