How often is the CFPT administered?
The CFPT is offered on demand.
Is there a charge/fee to take the CFPT?
There is a $5 sitting fee for the CFPT. This fee is fully refunded to the candidate one to three weeks after the testing event. However, should a candidate fail to appear for the CFPT and/or not cancel a previously-scheduled appointment 48 hours prior to the appointment, the candidate will be assessed a $45 no-show fee.
Is there a limit on the number of times a person can take the CFPT?
No. There is no limit on the number of times an individual may sit for the CFPT. However, one must wait 12 months between each test.
I registered for the CFPT in June, then had to cancel my appointment and ended up not taking the test — do I have to wait 12 months to re-test?
No. The 12-month wait applies only to candidates who sat for any portion of the test. Candidates who cancelled or otherwise missed their appointments may apply again to test, provided they have paid any no-show fees.
I registered for the CFPT, but had to cancel. I want to change my language designation when I register again to take the CFPT — is that possible?
Once submitted, the application is good for six months. After the six months, as long as you are otherwise eligible – have taken the CFPT no more than once in the last 12 months – you will be able to submit a new application and change your language designation.
Is the CFPT offered overseas, and if so, where?
Will the CFPT be offered at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in my country?
Currently, the CFPT is not offered at U.S. Embassies or Consulates overseas.
I already submitted my application, but I want to change something on it – can I?
Once an application has been submitted, candidates are unable to make any changes to it for six months. This includes changes to language designations. If you wish to change the information, a new application may be submitted after the six month validity period expires.
I don’t see my school listed in the drop down box — what do I do?
If a specific educational institution is not listed, please use “OTHER” and “Other Domestic.”
I’ve made an appointment for the CFPT, but need to change it — can I?
Candidates may change, modify or cancel their CFPT appointments through their Pearson VUE account.
If you have an extenuating circumstance and are suddenly unable to make your appointment and need to cancel, please contact Pearson VUE customer service.
How do I pay the no-show fee so that I can register for the CFPT again?
When I take the CFPT, where can I get my results?
Candidates will receive their results immediately after testing.
How long is my CFPT score valid for?
A CFPT score is valid only for the period in which the testing occurred. For example, if a candidate passed the CFPT and was invited to undergo language fluency tests, but chose not to do so, then that would be the end of the process. The candidate would have to re-take the CFPT 12 months later to begin the process over again.
Will taking the CFPT make me ineligible to take the Foreign Service Officer Test?
No, it will not. You make take each test once in every 12 month period.
